New York PSC Staff Proposes Nuclear Power Mandate
February 01, 2016
Staff of the New York Public Service Commission issued a white paper on a new Clean Energy Standard proposed for the state, calling for utilities to purchase power from several struggling upstate nuclear facilities while also boosting renewables and energy efficiency. By 2020, the state’s utilities will need to be supplying 15.7 percent of their forecasted load from nuclear facilities that Gov. Andrew Cuomo has vowed to protect from closure. Plans also call for utilities to grow use of renewables to almost 30 percent across the same time frame, an interim step toward the state’s strategy for reaching a 50 renewables goal by 2030.
