Coal's New Kingdom
December 02, 2019
There are no new coal-fired power generation plants under construction or planned in the U.S. and coal power capacity has been declining each year since 2011. This is not the case across the Pacific Ocean as China has nearly 200 GW under development or permitted for construction. China overtook the U.S. in 2005 as the world’s leading power generator from coal, according to CarbonBrief data. The comparison is not apples to apples as new plants in China are cleaner burning and subject to stricter emissions standards.
