ERCOT Summer Spikes Fail to Move Forward Curve
October 07, 2019
ERCOT reports in its September status report that 15 projects representing more than 3,000 MW in new capacity have been canceled. This comes on the heels of record price spikes in August and continued high prices in September. While the report shows additions in solar capacity development, wind and natural gas capacity plans declined. Plans for natural gas projects are 1.2 GW lower than a year ago and solar is 5.7 GW off its pace.
S&P Platts reports that the recent real time spikes were not high enough to spur investment in large natural gas projects and that the cancellations are not unusual.
