Texas Avoids Peak Repeat
September 22, 2020
Summer 2020 was no 2019 in ERCOT. One year ago, the state saw record peak electricity demand and prices. This year, the heat wave did not take a vacation, at least in Houston. The Bayou City saw Cooling Degree Days (CDDs) in August that averaged 27 above normal. However, Dallas was near normal with three of the past six weeks coming in under historic CDDs. Additionally, analysts at Platts credit wind resources which operated at relatively high capacity during the two hottest afternoons.
Texas is expected to increase its reserve margin next year by 17% and then again by 19% by 2022.
