The typical wind project produces electricity 80% of the time. Most turbines need winds of only 3 mph to produce. When winds reach 55 mph, turbines are stopped for safety reasons. Global wind speeds are increasing. Scientific American reports that average wind speed has increased form 7 mph to 7.4 mph in the past decade. This translates into a 17% increase in potential wind energy.
