Texas Develops Large-Load Curtailment Framework
During an October 6 workshop, ERCOT reviewed proposed deployment, registration, and compliance considerations for large-load curtailment under Texas Senate Bill 6, or SB6.
The workshop was the first in a likely series focused on operational considerations for backup-supported curtailable loads and related topics involving net-metered and voluntary early-curtailment loads. The series is intended to help shape the framework and revision requests needed to implement SB6 while supporting grid reliability.
SB6 authorizes ERCOT to direct the curtailment of certain large loads under specified conditions, including some facilities supported by onsite backup generation. The workshops will also address related operational topics for certain net-metered loads. The framework comes as a growing number of large loads seek to connect to the Texas grid. ERCOT said generation supply may not always keep pace as those loads are added.
