Powering Illinois: ENGIE and Ampion Expand Community Solar
ENGIE North America is bringing two new community solar farms online in Knox County, Illinois. This will make locally produced renewable energy available to the state’s electric grid. The Knox 2A and 2B solar farms, located in Galesburg, Illinois, will feed directly into the grid while giving residents and small businesses a way to participate in the clean‑energy economy. Subscriptions to the farms will be managed by Ampion, which oversees enrollment and customer support.
Together, the facilities will generate more than 8.2 million kilowatt‑hours annually, and help avoid over 7,800 tons of carbon emissions, roughly equivalent to removing 1,655 cars off the road for a year.
Through community solar, households and businesses can subscribe to a share of a solar farm’s output and receive bill credits in return. More than 60% of subscriptions for the Knox sites are reserved for low‑to moderate‑income households, qualifying through eligible programs like LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). These subscribers, alongside others in the area, are expected to benefit from solar credits applied directly to their monthly utility bills.
In total, the Knox solar farms will support 443 local customers and further Illinois’ goals for expanding clean, equitable access to renewable energy.
