A newly launched industry coalition, Utilize, is aiming to address rising US electricity demand by improving how existing grid infrastructure is used. According to the coalition’s official announcement, today’s grid is largely built for short periods of peak demand, leaving significant portions underutilized for most hours of the year.

Utilize brings together founding members including Google, Tesla, Carrier, Renew Home, Sparkfund, SPAN, and Verrus, representing both large power consumers and distributed energy technology providers. The coalition describes its mission as developing smarter, faster, and more affordable pathways for states to meet growing load from electrification, manufacturing, and data center expansion without unnecessary infrastructure costs.

The organization is structured as a nonpartisan, state‑focused effort, working directly with governors, legislatures, utilities, and regulators to modernize planning and policy frameworks around affordability, reliability, and speed. The coalition also notes it will release independent research from The Brattle Group, estimating that improved grid utilization could yield more than $100 billion in potential consumer savings over ten years. These savings, the coalition states, stem from avoiding excessive peak‑driven investments and enabling faster interconnection for new customers.
