Renewables Reach a US Milestone
In March 2026, renewable energy sources generated more electricity than natural gas across the US grid for the first full month on record. This is a milestone for the evolving power mix. The finding was identified by Ember, an independent energy think tank, based on analysis of the Energy Information Administration (EIA) hourly generation data for the full month of March.
While notable, the milestone requires context. March is a traditional “shoulder season,” when mild weather reduces overall electricity demand and allows wind, solar, hydropower, and bioenergy to account for a larger share of generation. Data from the EIA confirms that renewable output continues to rise nationally, while natural gas remains the largest single source of electricity on an annual basis.
As electricity demand increases, this milestone highlights both opportunity and complexity. Organizations pursuing decarbonization goals will need strategies that balance sustainability objectives with cost certainty, flexibility, and resilience in an increasingly dynamic energy market.
