GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA Donates Renewable Energy Certificates to the Houston Museum of Natural Science in Honor of Earth Day
Gift represents 100 percent of the museum's estimated electricity consumption in April
HOUSTON – April 2, 2013 – GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA, one of the country's largest competitive retail electricity providers to commercial, industrial and institutional customers, announced that it will donate Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The donation is being made in recognition of Earth Day and will offset 100% of the museum's electricity consumption during the month of April.
Each Green-e© Certified REC represents the environmental attributes or benefits associated with a specific quantity of energy generated from a renewable source, such as solar or wind. According to www.eia.gov, the donation is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 19,466 tree seedlings grown for 10 years, removing about 759 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, or displacing the estimated annual greenhouse gas emissions of 158 passenger vehicles.
"We're proud to support our customers – particularly a landmark venue like the Houston Museum of Natural Science – in incorporating eco-friendly practices in their energy management strategy," said Sam Henry, President of GDF SUEZ Energy Resources. "This donation further reinforces our commitment to helping customers blend day-to-day business activity with environmental sustainability."
"With a mission centered on preserving and advancing the general knowledge of science, we are equally committed to sustainability and are honored to have the support of GDF SUEZ Energy Resources in employing clean energy practices," said Latha Thomas, Vice President of Marketing & Communication at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. "This donation will certainly go a long way in reducing our environmental impact and providing a green destination for our visitors during Earth Day."
As one of the most heavily attended museum venues in the United States, the Houston Museum of Natural Science houses the Burke Baker Planetarium, Wortham Giant Screen Theatre, Cockrell Butterfly Center and a wide range of permanent and traveling exhibit areas. It also maintains two satellite facilities – the George Observatory and the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land. In addition to helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions, RECs help to encourage the development of domestic sources of cleaner, renewable energy. Green-e© is the nation's leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy and greenhouse gas emission reductions in the retail market.
