EV Electricity Demand Grows at Slower Pace

Electricity consumption by U.S. light-duty electric vehicles continued to increase during the first half of 2026, although the pace of growth moderated.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Monthly Energy Review, battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles consumed nearly 14 billion kilowatthours during the first six months of 2026. That was approximately 8% more than during the second half of 2025, compared with six-month growth rates ranging from 13% to 24% in several recent periods. EIA’s monthly data also show that battery electric vehicles account for most estimated light-duty EV electricity consumption.

EIA reported that the slowdown in EV electricity-consumption growth followed a decline in new EV sales after federal tax credits expired in September 2025.

For businesses planning fleets, charging infrastructure or facility loads, EV electricity consumption remains a demand trend worth monitoring, even as its recent growth rate moderates.
