Natural Gas Outlook: Demand Rises, Supply Holds

Nat Gas Pipes and Analyst

U.S. natural gas fundamentals remain relatively balanced heading into the second half of 2026. According to the latest outlook from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), inventories are expected to remain above the five-year average through much of the forecast period, supported by record production growth led by the Permian Basin. Working gas inventories stood 6% above the five-year average at the end of June and are forecast to reach 3,966 Bcf by the end of October.

Natural gas continues to play a critical role in the U.S. power sector. The EIA expects natural gas consumption for electricity generation to increase in both 2026 and 2027, reaching record levels next year. Rising electricity demand, additions to the gas-fired generation fleet, and competitive fuel economics are all contributing factors. Summer demand remains particularly important, as natural gas generation is often called upon during periods of peak cooling demand and when renewable output is lower.
