PJM Advances Expedited Storage Projects
PJM Interconnection has accepted the first three projects through a temporary process designed to connect large generation and storage resources to the grid more quickly. The effort comes as electricity demand grows across the region, particularly from data centers and other large facilities.
The projects include two battery storage facilities from ENGIE IR Holdings LLC with a combined 1,660 megawatts of nameplate capacity. An 860-megawatt project is planned for Crawford, Pennsylvania, and an 800-megawatt project is planned for Morrow, Ohio. According to PJM, both projects are slated to come online in mid-2029.
The Expedited Interconnection Track is open to qualifying projects backed by a primary siting authority that can begin operating within three years. Under the temporary process, PJM Interconnection may approve up to 10 interconnection requests per year in 2026 and 2027. The process is scheduled to end after 2027.
