September Inflation Releases Show Mixed Electricity Signals
The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ September inflation releases showed broad prices rising in August, while the electricity measures cited in the reports declined for the month. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.4% from July, but its electricity index fell 0.2%. That electricity index remained 3.8% higher than in August 2025.
The Producer Price Index (PPI) for final demand also rose 0.4% in August. Within that report, prices for residential electric power fell 0.5%. The CPI and PPI figures measure different parts of the economy, and neither electricity figure represents the price paid by a particular commercial facility.
The mixed August readings reinforce the value of separating broad economic indicators from the market-specific drivers affecting an organization’s energy spend.
