Consumer Confidence Edges Higher
July 21, 2025
The latest University of Michigan Survey of Consumer Sentiment reports that the consumer sentiment index rose slightly to 61.8 from 60.7 in its preliminary July summary.
An uptick in consumer confidence is usually a sign of strong energy demand as the index is generally considered a leading indicator of US consumer spending and the overall economy. Some may think this is a lagging indicator, but history shows it accurately anticipates changes in key measures like interest rates, unemployment, and GDP growth
The survey was first launched in 1940 and includes a minimum of 500 participants each month. The final July numbers will be reported on August 1.
