Under Deal With New York, Indian Point Nuclear Plant Will Shut Down

January 092017

The Indian Point nuclear facility, located 25 miles from New York City, will close by 2021 under an agreement between plant owner Entergy and the state. The shutdown will occur in stages, with one reactor ceasing operations by April 2020 and a second by April of the following year. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has pressed for years to shutter the plant, which, despite no acute danger, he says cannot be safely operated so close to the city. Despite the governor’s campaign to shut down the facility, he is also seeking to preserve three struggling upstate nuclear plants, citing their importance to achieving New York’s climate goals.
