As you prepare for Hurricane Sandy, we have provided some tips below to prepare for the storm, as well as, utility contact information in the event of a power outage.

October 29, 2012 – If you lose power, call the utility immediately. If you cannot get through due to high call volume, continue to try again once every 15 minutes until you are able to get a representative on the phone.

Immediately unplug all major appliances, such as window air conditioners, computers, monitors, and televisions so that they will not be damaged when power is restored if there are any power surges.

If you are using a generator to temporarily power your business, make sure that it is placed outside and not indoors. Generators can expel toxic carbon fumes that can be deadly without proper ventilation.

Leave a light switch on so that you will be able to know when power has been restored. Wait a couple of minutes after the power comes back on before you begin reconnecting equipment.

Post the emergency number for your electric utility somewhere in the office in case you need to call.

Have a office disaster plan that you and your employees can follow if something occurs.

Have spare batteries to replace ones that run out.
