Billions for Transmission and Distribution
November 28, 2022
Plans to modernize the U.S. power grid using allocations from the bipartisan infrastructure law were announced last week. The funds include $10.5 billion in competitive grants and another $2.5 billion through the Transmission Facilitation Program; representing the biggest federal investment in transmission and distribution in U.S. history. The grant program is called the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnership Program and will be open to submissions with a February deadline. Another $2.5 billion program announced is the Transmission Facilitation Program.
An estimated 70% of the nation’s transmission lines are over 25 years old. The first funding opportunity for FY 22 and 23 includes:
- Grid Resilience Utility and Industry Grants: $2.5 billion
- Smart Grid Grants: $3 billion
- Grid Innovation: $5 billion
