Coal Loses Share of ERCOT Generation To Gas, Nuclear, Wind

Wind, nuclear, and natural gas-fired generators increased their shares of the ERCOT generation mix at the expense of coal plants in January. Coal-fired plants supplied the largest amount of power at 35.6 percent, down from 38.3 percent in December but up from 24.9 percent in January 2016. Generation from gas-fired plants was next, at 29.9 percent, up from 29.6 percent in December but down sharply from 46.2 percent in January 2016; wind power was at 19.8 percent, up from 18 percent in December and 14.9 percent in January 2016; and nuclear was at 13.9 percent, up from 13.7 percent in December and 13.4 percent in January 2016.
