Coal Retirements in Focus

2019 was a watershed year for coal retirements in competitive markets. Pennsylvania saw 2,589 MW go offline while Illinois lost 2,002 MW. According to the EIA, retirements should continue into the 2020s. In the first half of the decade, 15,663 MW of capacity is planned to retire. Currently, 2020 has the highest total of planned retirements (6,102 MW), followed by 2022 (3,713 MW). The states with the most are Michigan (2,606 MW) and Ohio (1,500 MW).
