Consumer Price Index Rises in August

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased 0.1% in August on a seasonally adjusted basis, and 8.3% over the last 12 months. CPI measures the average change in prices paid by urban consumers for goods and services. Over the past 12 months, the energy index rose 23.8%, with a 15.8% rise for electricity and 33% for natural gas. The food index increased 11.4%, representing the largest 12-month increase since the period ending May 1979.
