Heat Dome Arrives in PJM
June 24, 2025
The longest day of the year and the official start of summer has arrived. It seems only fitting for forecasts of near 100-degree temperatures for much of ENGIE’s served retail markets, including the first time for the century mark in New York City since 2012. PJM became the first grid operator to issue an alert this week, asking generators to prepare to operate at maximum capacity if needed.
While the heat dome has arrived, the year to date has been cooler overall. According to the American Gas Association, 2025 cumulative CDDs are lower in 7 of 9 census regions. This drop in demand is reflected in recent inventory builds. EIA’s working gas inventory report recently saw a seven-week trend of injections above 100 bcf, the first occurrence since 2014. For the month of May, the weather was 18.4% cooler than last year and 4.7% above normal.
