Hydrogen Needs Help
March 27, 2023
Spearheading investment in low-emission hydrogen production has unlocked new applications for iron and steel production, chemical production, and power generation, as recent use cases in Spain, Sweden, and Japan demonstrate. Despite this progress, demand for low-emission hydrogen and hydrogen fuel is lagging behind standards needed to align with 2030 Net Zero goals. In 2021, low-emission hydrogen was less than 1% of global production despite public R&D investment ramping up to 35%. Demand is focused on traditional sectors and, without policy action targeted toward new and industrial applications, technology adoption isn’t on pace to narrow the gap towards net zero goals.
