NYISO Forecasts Adequate Capacity For Winter

December 052017

NYISO forecast that New York’s electric system has the capacity to meet demand and the necessary operating reserves to manage extreme cold weather through the winter of 2017-2018. The grid operator said it anticipates a peak demand of 24,365 MW, while total capacity resources – which include generation, imports, and demand response – are expected to be 44,557 MW. Last winter, peak demand reached 24,164 MW when weather was milder than the 10- and 20-year averages. The state’s record winter peak was set in 2014, after polar vortex conditions pushed demand to 25,738 MW.
