The Cost of Missing Data
October 07, 2025
The first Friday of the month had an absence of key data indicators, due to the US government shutdown. Private-sector data, like the ADP employment report, offers insight into job sector growth and the ISM and S&P Global PMI Reports signal activity in manufacturing and services, key sectors for energy consumption.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Bureau of Economic Analysis have both said they will suspend reports during this shutdown.
These indicators influence energy demand forecasts, price movements, and policy decisions. Traders and analysts rely on them to gauge economic health, which directly affects energy consumption.
The unemployment rate held flat at 4.3%. Other nongovernmental data showed similar trends: Conditions overall are softening, with job availability gradually shrinking.
The lack of official data forces greater reliance on alternative sources. It also raises questions about regulatory delays, permitting processes, and long-term planning for energy infrastructure.
