U.S. Nuclear Capacity Rebound
March 18, 2024
After starting the year with capacity outages that were higher year-over-year in January, the U.S. nuclear reactor fleet has responded with lower outages. In January, the average daily outage was 3.18 GW more than the same period in 2023. In fact, nearly the entire month of January was above the five-year average for outages. Since then, operations have generally set a new, more reliable pace.
In March, daily outages averaged 1.3 GW less than 2023, and near the bottom of the five-year range. Twelve U.S. states generate more than 30% of their electricity from nuclear assets. (Date source: EIA)
